L’ Origine du monde, Watercolour, 65x65cm, 2020

I am trying to readjust my life, my consumption and artistic production to take account of the issues we face. It is not just a question of content of the work, so for example I have eliminated oil painting as it generated too much toxic waste – as well as the cost and travel required for film and photographic projects. Even with watercolor, my chosen medium – it is necessary to eliminate heavy metals like cadmium which would otherwise get into a nearby watercourses. If this is sounding a bit worthy – there are also gains to be made from an aesthetic reset. I am exploring a sort of expressionist minimalism with watercolor, as I attempt to find a language capable of addressing the complexities of water, the environment, the Covid-19 epidemic – and the present.
