The history of machine vision is a photographic history. Since its early days, the evolution of visually “intelligent” machines has been closely intertwined with photography. From the first small datasets to recent databases consisting of millions of images, photography played a fundamental role in the development of machine vision. Photography has not just been a companion along this journey; it has been a pivotal element in the cultivation and advancement of machine vision technologies.

Using a feature descriptor called HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradients) in the form of gradients that resemble the distribution of light on a given image, “Sometimes your eyes do not see” photographic project investigates the operational aspects of a technique that closely refers to the origin of photography.

Carloalberto Treccani received his PhD degree at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. Currently he is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing at Hong Kong Baptist University. His work explores the development of visually ‘intelligent’ machines and their implications on the ways we see the world. As an artist, his work interrogates the production, reproduction, manipulation, circulation, perception, and falsification of images.
