Inspired by the atmospheric perspective often observed in my hometown, Mountain Lu. It aims to compress the personal experience of travel through the exploration of darkroom techniques and multiple exposures.

The photographs are sourced from my journeys, specifically along the British coastline and the Shetland Islands. Using techniques such as multiple exposures and creating photograms etc., the content of the photographs and personal experiences seamlessly merge into a cohesive singular image. The compression and reproduction of experiential depth are achieved through meticulous darkroom experimentation. The primary objective of this project is to transform the landscape into an elusive visual experience, transcending the constraints of traditional narrative images.

Mingyue Liu (b.2000, Jiangxi, China) is an artist who works in photography. She is interested in exploring photography as a state of tertiary retention, documenting the fleeting and ever-changing elements beyond its narrative function. Her photography relies on extensive darkroom practices, including multi-layered exposures and crafted negative photograms. Her work demonstrates the raw technical nature of photography, offering an alternative way of observing unique moments that reflect the universal human condition of forgetfulness. Her photography is informed by an anti-narrative purpose, often focusing on the repetition of multiple negatives within a single frame. Her art experiments with the different meanings of the act of taking photos, including the people, things, and subjective observations of objects encountered while photographing. Assigning values to personal experiences in the process of people’s constant forgetting is the original impulse of her creative work.
